What do you look for in a student?

We look for students who can matriculate through a rigorous program, students who are motivated and driven by science or technology. We want a well-rounded student who can actually graduate. We need a student that can balance academics and the social life and the new environment of being in college and can go out and inspire.

What advice do you have for students who might fall short of the minimum requirements but still want to attend?

The average freshman that we would like would have a 3.0 GPA, a 21 on the ACT or 1000 on the math and verbal section of the SAT. We have conditional acceptance for a student that may fall short of those areas. For students who fall short, we encourage them to attend a junior college so they can transfer in with a higher GPA.

What advice do you have for applicants?

Make sure your reasoning for coming to Tuskegee is to be a productive citizen in the world. It’s a great school, it has a great history, but it’s not for everyone. Make sure we have the program you’re looking for and the extracurricular activities you’re living for. Tuskegee does not require an essay or recommendation letter. For students that fall below requirements we suggest you send those in. Explain any hardships to us in your essay. Make sure everything you send is complete.

How does the university weigh GPA, SAT scores, extracurricular activities, recommendations, and the college essay?

The GPA and standardized test scores are the first priority, especially the test scores. We do take into consideration extracurricular activities. We look to see if you’ve done well academically and socially and have been able to balance. We look at those programs and extracurricular activities that have merit like the debate team or SGA or band.
