The Schott Foundation for Public Education recently released a series of infographics that focus on the barriers black girls face in public school.
The infographics illustrate the unique systemic problems that many black girls deal with in school on a daily basis. Problems include unfair discipline practices, curriculum disinvestment, lack of support for girls who shoulder familial responsibilities, high rates of exposure to sexual harassment and violence, and lack of resources for counseling and addressing trauma.
I chose this infographic because of the familial responsibilities pictured here. It reminds me of a childhood friend I had who was burdened early on by such responsibilities–she ended up dying of cancer shortly after her 27th birthday.
