Ann C. Fudge becomes president of the Maxwell House division of Kraft General Foods, making her the highest-ranking black woman in corporate America and one of the most powerful executives in the food industry.

Within a decade, she would be named chair and CEO of Young & Rubicam Inc., propelling her to become the first African American to head a major Madison Avenue firm.
