Sunday morning, Hillary Clinton promised more than 1,200 low-wage, fast food workers around the nation that she will support their fight for a $15 minimum wage increase.

“I want to be your champion,” the Huffington Post reports Clinton saying in a phone call to the group gathered in Detroit for a fast food worker’s convention. “I want to fight with you every day. I’m well aware that the folks on top already have plenty of friends in Washington, but we, together, will change the direction of this great country.”

Clinton urged the workers who created the “Fight for 15” movement to keep their “important” work going as they push to raise workers’ pay to $15 an hour.

“No one who works an honest job in America should have to live in poverty,” CNN reports her saying. “No man or woman who works hard to feed America’s families should have to be on food stamps to feed their own family.”

Clinton’s support comes at a time when several cities and states across the nation are implementing laws to raise workers’ pay. Recently, Los Angeles became one of the largest cities to raise their minimum wage to $15. Meanwhile, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo just announced a plan to create a state wage board and raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour without approval of state lawmakers.
