Lil’ Wayne: George Floyd’s Death Should Be Blamed On Black America

Lil’ Wayne: George Floyd’s Death Should Be Blamed On Black America

Sounds like Lil’ Wayne is playing “blame the victim.” The rap artist was recently chatting with fellow hip-hop icon Fat Joe on Instagram Live about the murder of George Floyd and the protests.

During the session, Lil Wayne, 46, said Floyd’s tragic death would be blamed on Black America. “If we want to place the blame on anybody, it should be ourselves for not doing more than what we think we’re doing,” he said, according to The Grio.

“I think when we see these situations, I think we also have to understand that we have to get very specific,” Wayne said. “And what I mean by that is we have to stop viewing it with such a broad view, meaning we have to stop placing the blame on the whole force and the whole everybody or a certain race or everybody with a badge.”

Needless to say, Lil’  Wayne words didn’t sit well with some.

“Uncut Gems” and “The Photograph” actor Lakeith Stanfield took to Instagram to scold Wayne, The Source reported. In a now-deleted IG post, Stanfield posted a black and white picture of police officers at what seems to be a civil rights protest, with the caption, “Wayne stfu.”

Some people went to Twitter to call out Lil Wayne. One tweeted, “ABSOLUTELY HATE when Black PEOPLE nowadays openly make millions through their Forefathers blood, sweat & tears, BUT then ABUSE the platform They’ve been given and respond on the SUBJECT with no thanks or regard for The STRUGGLE that got Them where They are… #LilWayne+Kanye”

Others applauded him for his brash candor. One person tweeted, “This is why Wayne the GOAT. He is straight up no BS. Tweets are not action. #lilwayne #truth.”

Ice Cube Joins Charlamagne, Diddy, Against Biden Democrats: ‘Let’s Hold The Black Vote Hostage Until There’s A Black Agenda We’re Satisfied With’

On May 24, Ice Cube tweeted, “Hold the Black vote hostage until one of ’em comes with A Black Agenda that we’re satisfied with. It’s not our job to fix the country’s mess until we fix our mess…#fuckyoupayme.”

The hip-hop icon’s tweet falls in line with a sentiment Sean “Diddy” Combs recently shared during an interview with Naomi Campbell when he called for Black people to hold off giving Joe Biden and the Democrats support until the Black community’s issues and needs are addressed.

“We want to know very clearly. Just like Trump made it clear that he wanted to build a wall, Biden needs to make it clear that he’s gonna change the lives and quality of life of Black and Brown people,” Diddy said. “Or else he can’t get the vote. I will hold the vote hostage if I have to.”

In the interview on Campbell’s web series, “No Filter with Naomi,” Diddy declared the “Black vote ain’t free.” More people seem to be following this belief especially after the presumptive presidential Democrat’s interview on The Breakfast Club with Charlamagne Tha God.

Nina Turner, national co-chair of the Bernie Sanders 2020 presidential campaign, tweeted, “The @DNC must stop playing games with our votes. And to my Beloved Black Community: Now is the time! We owe it to our ancestors, ourselves and to our future to seize this moment for the uplift of our people. This assignment is forever!#Iaintblack

During the interview, Biden seemingly questioned Charlamagne’s — and any other undecided Black voter’s — Blackness by saying Black people who don’t vote for him“ain’t Black.”

Biden later backtracked and expressed remorse for acting so “cavalier,” insisting that he’s “never, never, ever taken the African-American community for granted,” Hot News Hip Hop reported.

Shortly after Diddy’s declaration, Biden released his plan for Black America called, “Lift Every Voice.”

Now, after The Breakfast Club interview, the Biden campaign reposted highlights from the plan on Instagram.

According to the post, “The Biden Plan for Black America” will close the wealth and income gap by investing in African-American workers, businesses, and communities, TheGrio reported. The post also stressed that a Biden administration would push for health equity and address racial inequity.

“I shouldn’t have been such a wise guy. I shouldn’t have been so cavalier…I have never, ever taken the African-American community for granted,” Biden said, according to journalist Yamiche Alcindor. “No one should have to vote for any party based on their race, background, religion, or any demographic information.”

While the sentiment of Diddy, Charlemagne, and now Ice Cube seems to be gaining momentum, other Black voters say now is not the time to put the election on the line.

Holding the Black vote hostage is irresponsible and puts the Black community in danger, wrote Christina M. Greer, an associate professor at Fordham University and the author of “Black Ethnics: Race, Immigration, and the Pursuit of the American Dream.” Greer co-hosts the podcast FAQ-NYC, and is the political editor at The Grio.

While Greer said she agrees with Diddy that Biden and the Democrats cannot take the Black vote for granted, she feels holding the Black vote hostage “would be detrimental to not only the Black community but the nation (and world) for generations to come.”

Cleveland To Pay $18M To Trio Who Spent Decades In Prison For 1975 Wrongful Murder Convictions

Cleveland To Pay $18M To Trio Who Spent Decades In Prison For 1975 Wrongful Murder Convictions

Three African-American men who spent decades in prison in Cleveland for crimes they didn’t commit will be paid a combined $18 million from the city for wrongful murder convictions in 1975.

It took 12-hours of mediation for Cleveland to reach the settlement with the three wrongfully accused — Rickey Jackson, Wiley Bridgeman and his brother Kwame Ajamu. Under the settlement, the payments will be split up through April 2023. The lawsuits filed by all three men will be dropped.

Friedman and Gilbert, the law firm representing two of the men, said the settlement is the largest awarded over police misconduct in Ohio, WKYC reported.

The exonerated men, who are now in their 60s, were convicted of murder in 1975 for shooting money-order collector Harold Franks. Even while behind bars, the men maintained their innocence and were finally cleared in 2014.

By that time, Jackson had served 39 years in prison and it is believed he served the longest amount of time behind bars by anyone wrongfully convicted of a crime, Cleveland.com reported.

“Money cannot buy freedom and money certainly does not make innocence,” Ajamu said.

Under the settlement deal, Jackson will get 40 percent ($7.2 million) and Bridgeman and Ajamu will split the rest, Jackson’s lawyer Elizabeth Wang said.

“What is 39 years of your life worth?” Wang said. “Nobody can put a number on that. No amount of money that can compensate them for what they went through.”

In August 1975 a jury found Jackson, Bridgeman, and Ajamu (then known as Ronnie Bridgeman), guilty of murdering Franks. They were also convicted of trying to kill store owner Anna Robinson. The men were sentenced to death but the sentences were reduced to life in 1978 when the state enacted a short-lived moratorium on the death penalty, Cleveland.com reported.

At the time of the conviction, the three were just 17, 20, and 18 years old.

Nearly 40 years later, the eyewitness, who was 12 years old at the time, recanted his testimony and judges overturned the men’s criminal convictions. The eyewitness, Edward Vernon, said in 2014 that city detectives pressured him to lie on the witness stand. He said the police threatened to jail his parents and that police manipulated him, Cleveland.com reported.

The Ohio Innocence Project, which has obtained Vernon’s recantation, took on the trio’s case. Bridgeman, 65, and Jackson, 63, were released in 2014. Ajamu, 62, was paroled in 2003.

Besides the settlement, the trio’s story was chronicled in a book written by Kyle Swenson, now a reporter for The Washington Post, who covered the case for the alternative weekly Cleveland Scene.

The men were set to take their lawsuits to trial in July. They sued the city of Cleveland and the detectives who investigated the case, AP reported. The federal lawsuit suit, filed July 2, 2015, named three Cleveland police detectives and a sergeant and the estates of a sergeant and three other detectives who have since died.

Ajamu told WKYC he hopes their case will cause improvements in the justice system. “We accept and hope that there’s a challenge in this organization now that you will go forward with the right agility towards equality and justice,” Ajamu said.

“This lawsuit and settlement expose the egregious misconduct by police who worked up the case, fabricated false evidence, withheld evidence of innocence, and then coerced Vernon into lying on the stand at trial,” the law firm of Friedman and Gilbert said in a statement. “The settlement also marks the City of Cleveland’s failure to monitor and train rank and file police in the 1970s, reflected in the department’s widespread culture of racist policing and misconduct with impunity.”

Nick Cannon Graduates From Howard University With A Degree In Criminology

There’s more to Nick Cannon than “Wild ‘N Out.”

The host of multiple TV shows, Cannon, 39, has just graduated from Howard University and he proudly tweeted his accomplishment.

“I graduated from Howard University @howarduniversity1867 today! Received a degree in Criminology/Administration of Justice and a minor in Africana Studies! Had the opportunity to speak at the virtual ceremony, Masters and Ph.D. is next! #HU2020,” he tweeted along with a video of himself wearing his cap and gown.

He also spoke during a Howard University virtual graduation ceremony of his intentions to earn his master’s degree and Ph.D. next.

Back in 2016, the “Drumline” actor announced that he had enrolled at the HBCU. He tweeted at the time,  “Nelson Mandela once said, ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world,’ and with that said I have officially enrolled at Howard University.”

He continued, “I am always seeking new challenges and continual growth and decided to obtain my first college degree from an institution that had a proven legacy of producing great minds. I have friends, mentors and colleagues who attended Howard University. I look forward to this new journey in my life and am excited about the possibilities ahead.”

Cannon has a lot of things on his plate. Besides hosting “Wild ‘N Out,” “Lip Sync Battle Shorties,” and “The Masked Singer,” he is also gearing up for the release of his upcoming documentary.

“Strong Enemies: The Untold Case of Dr. Sebi” is about controversial natural healer Dr. Sebi who claimed to have the cure for AIDS, Revolt TV reported. Hip-hop artist and community activist Nipsey Hussle had started the documentary prior to his death. Cannon vowed to see the project to completion.

Cannon also has a nationally syndicated daytime talk show coming up in September. He recently signed on as the morning host at Power 106FM in L.A. as well as agreeing to the third season of  “Caught on Camera with Nick Cannon,”  Hip Hop Vibe reported. Cannon previously hosted “America’s Got Talent.”

On top of all of this, Cannon opened a vegan soul food restaurant in Los Angeles at the end of April. The VTree Hollywood is located inside the 100-year-old Japanese restaurant Yamashiro, according to Vegan News.

For the restaurant venture, Cannon partnered with acclaimed plant-based chef Chef Velvet. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, VTree Hollywood is only offering curbside orders and take-out for now, Black Enterprise reported. Chef Velvet has a popular vegan restaurant called  Veltree in Charlotte, NC.

“My goal is to be the most powerful person in the media,” Cannon said in a statement announcing his new venture. “Being able to have a multi-platform empire is really what I have been focusing on. Create household legacies and brands, from radio to digital to daily television. I just feel like I can really do things (that) no one else has ever done before.”

Georgia Verifies Thousands of New COVID-19 Cases With Black Body Bags Skyrocketing

Georgia Verifies Thousands of New COVID-19 Cases With Black Body Bags Skyrocketing

Georgia started the process of reopening its economy on April 24, something Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms was firmly against. The mayor warned of more covid-19 deaths if the state opened back up too soon. It seems she was right.

On the same day that Gov. Brian Kemp lifted Georgia’s stay-at-home order for most residents, Georgia confirmed that its covid-19 death toll increased by 1,165 within 24 hours, according to figures posted by the Georgia Department of Health, Savannah Now reported.

Georgia’s total number of cases has increased to nearly 30,000, according to Worldometer.

Black people are experiencing the highest number of covid-19 illnesses in the state, especially in Atlanta. Eighty percent of coronavirus patients hospitalized in seven Atlanta hospitals surveyed in March were Black patients, according to a new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) study. African Americans in Georgia are hospitalized for covid-19 at substantially higher rates than their white counterparts, according to the CDC.

Atlanta is the second largest majority African-American metro area in the U.S. The Black population was 61.4 percent in 2000 and 54 percent in 2010 as African Americans in the city moved to the suburbs.

New infections continue to climb by the hundreds daily in metro Atlanta, Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. As of (May2), there are at least 2,850 cases of the virus in Fulton County, 2,051 in DeKalb, 1,829 in Gwinnett, 1,664 in Cobb, 1,379 in Hall, 720 in Clayton, 492 in Henry, 477 in Cherokee, 371 in Carroll, 324 in Douglas, 318 in Bartow, 304 in Forsyth, 198 in Newton, 191 in Rockdale and 189 in Paulding.

African Americans make up more than 36 percent of overall confirmed coronavirus cases in Georgia, according to the state’s health department — slightly higher than their 32 percent share of the state population, CBS News reported.

Kemp allowed hair and nail salons, bowling alleys, gyms, and massage-therapy centers to reopen first. Restaurants and movie theaters were allowed to reopen on April 27, the Daily Mail reported.

Businesses allowed to reopen were informed they could only reopen with “minimum basic operations” and that they should use safety measures including checking staff for temperatures and respiratory illnesses, as well as increasing sanitation efforts, wearing masks and gloves, and continuing to practice social distancing in work stations, Business Insider reported.

Kemp said he is still urging residents to stay home whenever possible, and businesses must continue to operate under strict social distancing guidelines until May 13.

White Supremacists Urging Members To Spread Coronavirus To Blacks, Jews, Cops: FBI

White Supremacists Urging Members To Spread Coronavirus To Blacks, Jews, Cops: FBI

African Americans have been hit hardest by the coronavirus, contracting and dying of the virus at disproportionate rates. Now the FBI reports that white supremacists, neo-Nazis and other extremist groups are encouraging followers infected with the coronavirus to spread the deadly disease to Black people, Jews and members of law enforcement.

ABC News recently obtained an alert sent by the FBI’s New York office that warned that “members of extremist groups are encouraging one another to spread the virus, if contracted, through bodily fluids and personal interactions.”

The alert, which was sent to local police departments, said that extremist groups were directing members to use spray bottles to spread infectious fluids, People reported.

The groups also advised members to leave “saliva on door handles” at FBI offices throughout the country, spit on elevator buttons and spread the virus in “nonwhite neighborhoods,” the brief states according to MSNBC.

“White Racially Motivated Violent Extremists have recently commented on the coronavirus stating that it is an ‘OBLIGATION’ to spread it should any of them contract the virus,” the FBI brief said.

The discussions between extremist groups took place on a Telegram app channel that focused on “siege culture,” EUR Web reported.

The FBI declined to comment on the alert but issued a statement saying, “FBI field offices routinely share information with their local law enforcement partners to assist in protecting the communities they serve. These products are intended to be informative in nature, and as such, they contain appropriate caveats to describe the confidence in the sourcing of information and the likelihood of the assessment. Additionally, when written at a local level, these products will note that the perspective offered may be limited to the field office’s area of responsibility.”

Orleans Parish Had Highest Per-Capita COVID-19 Death Rate By Far Of U.S. Counties

Orleans Parish Had Highest Per-Capita COVID-19 Death Rate By Far Of U.S. Counties

Residents in Orleans Parish are dying of COVID-19 coronavirus at an alarming rate. It has the highest per-capita death rate of all U.S. counties, according to NOLA.com. The report states that one out of every 10,000 residents had succumbed to the virus.

That death toll is even higher that New York’s Richmond County – commonly known as Staten Island – which has the second-highest death rate. It is not a close second, however, as Staten Island only has half the amount of deaths as Orleans Parish.

Experts predicted New Orleans was on track to become the next coronavirus epicenter, reported Reuters. Since the city didn’t have its first official diagnosis until March 14, its numbers mark the highest growth of coronavirus cases. The fast rates of infection in Big Easy can hit the rest of the South hard.

Dr. Rebekah Gee leads Louisiana State University’s (LSU) health care services division and was the state’s former health secretary. She said Mardi Gras could be to blame for the alarming outbreak.

“Mardi Gras was the perfect storm, it provided the perfect conditions for the spread of this virus,” Gee told Reuters.

Other health experts share Gee’s theory, meaning they believe the coronavirus had already begun infecting people in the states sooner than initially thought.

Susanne Straif-Bourgeois is a professor at LSU Health Sciences School of Public Health and an expert on pandemics.

“I think we have a huge number of undiagnosed people,” Straif-Bourgeois told NOLA.com. “Our model shows it started around Mardi Gras and spread. And we only tested people sick enough to be hospitalized, which means most people were not diagnosed because they might have mild signs and symptoms or [could] be asymptomatic and be contributing to the transmission.”

Add to that the fact that many New Orleans residents experience higher rates of health challenges like obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc. and they may be more likely to experience complications that lead to death from the virus.

Harvard University Epidemiologist Marc Lipsitch said testing is still an issue, but noted counting deaths per capita may be a more effective way to determine the size of the pandemic.

Since health experts are still working to find the best way to measure whether a death was due to the coronavirus alone, Lipstick echoed Straif-Bourgeois’ assertion that there were still many undiagnosed cases, even among the fatalities. Due to Katrina, Lipstich said Louisiana may have more effective procedures concerning this.

“We should consider that maybe the testing of fatal cases has been more effective there (in Louisiana) than in other places,” Lipsitch said. “I think a lot of deaths [attributable to coronavirus] have been undetected.”

Beauty Industry Workers Risk House Calls, Defy Social Distancing Guidelines To Survive Coronavirus Shutdown

Beauty Industry Workers Risk House Calls, Defy Social Distancing Guidelines To Survive Coronavirus Shutdown

Many states have shut down non-essential businesses in an effort stop the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus, but many beauty industry workers said they can’t afford to comply. Some of them are risking their health to make it through this crisis.

Barbers, beauticians, nail techs and personal trainers detailed how they’ve had to adjust to the world’s new normal in an article published by The Washington Post.

From placing ads on Craigslist and making house calls to having to clients and themselves wear protective N95 face masks, these workers are doing what they can to stay afloat. Some are motivated by a desire to help their clients attain some level of sanity as America’s coronavirus cases continue to escalate.

“With nails, of course it’s not the end of the world if you don’t have it,” Raleigh nail tech Stephanie Mooij told the Post. Mooij started doing house calls after her salon was shut down. “But if they don’t look good and they’re not kept up, it’s kind of like mental health status, you know? You look down and it’s like, ‘Everything’s falling apart, and my nails are falling apart.’”

Barber Rene Guemps was a travel barber before the pandemic. But now he said he can see the fear his clients have when he shows up. He takes extra precautions to try and keep them both safe.

“Some of them, they panic and stay away,” Guemps told the Post. “It’s almost like, ‘Doesn’t this guy know he’s going to have to get close to me at some point?’ I had one guy a couple days ago … I’m standing at the door and he’s all the way across the living room, talking and telling me what to do.”

After reading the struggles of the beauty workers highlighted in the Post, Moguldom asked a beauty industry worker in Miami how they were surviving amid the pandemic.

Shalawn Brownlee is the owner and CEO of Manicure Bar in Miami’s Cutler Bay neighborhood. In contrast to some of her aforementioned counterparts, she decided to obey Miami-Dade’s stay-at-home order once her salon was ordered closed.

“I’m just trusting in God. That’s how I’m surviving through coronavirus,” Brownlee told Moguldom. “I’m not worrying about trying to go out there to get sick and die. Life over money. That’s what I believe in.

French Doctors Say COVID-19 Vaccines Should Be Tested On Poor Africans

French Doctors Say COVID-19 Vaccines Should Be Tested On Poor Africans

There outrage all across Africa after two well-respected French doctors went on a live TV show and suggested that coronavirus vaccines be tested on poor Africans.

The two doctors said during a segment broadcast on the French TV channel LCI that the testing should be done in Africa, “where there are no masks, no treatment, nor intensive care,” reported Business Insider.

One of the doctors, Jean-Paul Mira, went further and compared Africans to prostitutes who were the focus of past AIDS testing. “We tried things on prostitutes because they are highly exposed and do not protect themselves,” he said.

Of course, these suggestions were immediately called out as racist, especially by several African notables such as former Chelsea Football Club star Didier Drogba and former Barcelona striker Samuel Eto’o who tweeted their outrage at the two medics’ remarks.

Drogba, who is from Ivory Coast, tweeted: “It is totally inconceivable we keep on cautioning this. Africa isn’t a testing lab. I would like to vividly denounce those demeaning, false and most of all deeply racists words.”

Former Chelsea striker Demba Ba, who is from Senegal, tweeted, “Welcome to the West, where white people believe themselves to be so superior that racism and debility become commonplace Time to rise.”

Mira is head of the intensive-care department at the Cochin Hospital in Paris. The other doctor, Camille Locht, is the research director at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research, known as Inserm.

“If I can be provocative,” Mira said on the TV show, “shouldn’t we do this study in Africa where there are no masks, no treatment, no intensive care? A bit like we did in some studies on AIDS. We tried things on prostitutes because they are highly exposed and do not protect themselves.”

Locht agreed. “You are right. We are actually thinking of a parallel study in Africa to use with the same kind of approach with BCG placebos,” he said, referring to vaccination against tuberculosis that Inserm says has appeared to protect children against infections, particularly respiratory ones.

“We will, in fact, think seriously about it,” he said.

Africa is the continent with the lowest number of reported COVID-19 cases, with nearly 7,500 cases and more than 320 deaths, Al Jazeera reported.

Nick Cannon Delivers On Promise To Finish Nipsey’s Documentary On Legendary Healer

Nick Cannon Delivers On Promise To Finish Nipsey’s Documentary On Legendary Healer

March 31 marked a year since the world lost iconic rapper and community builder Nipsey Hussle – and Nick Cannon is one of the many people making sure “The Marathon Continues.” In commemoration of Hussle’s death, Cannon dropped the trailer for “Strong Enemies: The Untold Case of Dr. Sebi” on Instagram – making good on his promise to finish the documentary Hussle had started.

The documentary trailer opens with Hussle’s voice, then cuts to a clip of the late Los Angeles legend speaking about the beloved natural healer and herbalist. It then shows footage of interviews with various artists and experts as well as follows Cannon on his search for answers.

Born Alfred Bowman in Honduras, Dr. Sebi believed in using food as medicine. He rose to prominence for claiming to have found a natural cure for AIDS, cancer and other infectious diseases.

Hussle (born Ermias Joseph Asghedom) revealed he was working on a documentary about Dr. Sebi’s court cases in the 1980s, which arose after he placed ads in a newspaper about his ability to cure AIDS.

“I’m working on doing a documentary on the trial in 1985 when Dr. Sebi went to trial against New York because he put in the newspaper that he cured AIDS,” Hussle said during an interview with The Breakfast Club in 2018. “He beat the case and he went to federal court the next day and beat that case, on record, and nobody talks about it.”

Though Sebi was acquitted in those cases, he was arrested March 28, 2016 at Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport in Honduras for money laundering when he was found carrying $37,000 in cash, according to The Source. He was held there until he died August 6, 2016. The official cause of death was listed as pneumonia, but Dr. Sebi’s followers believe his death was suspicious.

“Why do they kill all holistic doctors?” Hussle responded when Charlamagne Tha God asked him why he thought they killed Dr. Sebi. “You short-stopping they grind. Why do niggas get killed for hustling in front of a nigga spot? You short stopping the grind. And these niggas, they check is billions. You got niggas that get flipped for a couple hundred thousand; so you playin’ with some pharmaceutical money, you know.”

Hussle said he wanted to do the documentary because he thought the story was too significant not to be told.

“I think the story’s important. I think it’s a powerful narrative. … Imagine this, anybody in this room if I could say, ‘Hey somebody cured AIDS,’ y’all would be like yeah right,” Hussle said. And then I could show you an example of him going to trial and proving in a court to a jury that he cured AIDS, y’all would be interested in that and y’all would look into the way he did it.”

Cannon made the promise to complete the documentary after Hussle was killed. In an Instagram post paying tribute to Hussle the day after the Grammy-award winning rapper was gunned down in front of his Marathon Clothing Store, Cannon wrote:

“Where you left off, we gonna carry one! It’s a MARATHON, so I’m picking up the baton! Because they can’t kill us all! Spiritual Warfare is REAL and in full effect. … Now, Your message is my message! Your work is my work!” Cannon wrote in the caption of a photo of he and Hussle.

He followed it up with a post that included video footage of Dr. Sebi talking about how Black people should eat, adding the caption, “We have to take RESPONSIBILITY for our OWN!!”
