Son Reunites With Father’s Painting That Depicts Jesus As Black Man

Gift Livingstone Sango is ecstatic after recently discovering his father’s painting portraying Jesus as a Black man.

“My father used to draw Jesus as Black because God is for all of us. He is not a God of color,” said the 65-year-old, according to AP.

His late father drew the painting in the 1940s, which is currently displayed in a historical exhibit, “The Stars are Bright,” located at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. The collection was not available in the country for more than 70 years, and this is the first display of his father’s artwork, according to The Washington Post.

Sango placed a picture of his father next to the painting.

“We never knew our father was such a great artist, but after 70 years, we are seeing these pictures. We are being called,” said Sango. “Some of these pictures we had never seen before. I am seeing my father as a boy.”

Sango’s father reportedly studied taxidermy and had a successful career working with the National Museum in Bulawayo.

The captivating art show at the National Gallery lasts until the end of October and is comprised of paintings created by Black students in the 1940s and 1950s at Cyrene Mission School. The mission school was the first art institution to provide art instruction to Black students in the white minority-controlled Rhodesia, the Associated Press reports.

The works of art are filled with vibrant, bright colors paired with striking brush strokes that capture African life in dance, mundane activities like household chores, and hunting wildlife juxtaposed against the rising modern world of railroads and electricity lines. According to the Associated Press, the paintings also showcase African folklore and Biblical tales, introduced to Africans by western colonization.

Britain’s King George VI instantly became a fan of the students’ work when he visited them in 1947, and a portion of the collection of the work was shipped overseas for display in London, Paris, and New York. According to The Washington Post, some paintings were sold to help finance the school.

A Zimbabwean discovered the forgotten paintings and recognized the name Cyrene on boxes in the basement of St. Michael’s and All Angels Church in London, according to an official statement by organizers of the exhibition in Harare.

“It was a very difficult time in the 1940s. It was the height of World War II, and it was the height of colonialism in Zimbabwe,” Lisa Masterson, curator of the exhibition, said. “For a white Anglican priest to empower young Black students with new skills and belief in themselves was completely revolutionary in those days,” she said. She also complimented the school’s prudent founder Edward Paterson for making art a required subject.

Fish Scales of the Southern rap group Nappy Roots is recuperating after assailants shot and robbed him outside the brewery he co-owns in Atlanta, Entertainment Weekly reported.

Two suspects first robbed a customer in the parking lot of Atlantucky Brewing around 11 p.m. Wednesday as the restaurant was closing for the night. They then turned their sights on rapper Scales, real name Melvin Adams Jr., and forced him into his car at gunpoint, according to 11 Alive.

Police said the suspects kidnapped Adams and drove to his home in the suburb of Hapeville, according to Billboard.

“Once he had an opportunity, he tried to make a run for it,” Capt. Christian Hunt said to news outlets. “What we learned is the suspects grabbed him and they began to tussle, and that’s when he got shot.”

The 45-year-old business owner rushed to a neighbor’s home to ask for help, causing the suspects to flee the scene, Billboard reported.

Nappy Roots posted a photo of Scales on social media recovering in a hospital bed and thanked fans for their concern, support, and prayers. The band said Scales wanted everyone to know he was in “good spirits.” He assured his fans and customers that he would return soon to making music and operating Atlantucky Brewing, according to EW.

Today Show Co-Host Hoda Kotb Talks About the Joys of Being On a Child’s Schedule and Co-Parenting With Her Ex

Hoda Kotb, co-anchor of the NBC News morning show Today and mother of two daughters, sat down with People to discuss how she co-parents with her ex-fiancé, financier Joel Schiffman, and her future plans to adopt again, according to Mom

As a mother to Haley Joy, 5, and Hope Catherine, 3, Kotb embraces the challenges and joys of motherhood, according to People.

“Every morning I leave them a note and a map to find the note. I draw cartoons, and then I hide it so they see it before they go to school,” Kotb says. “Then a lot of the time I’m done with work and can pick them up in the afternoon. We’re eating dinner at 5, in the bath by 6, drying off at 6:30, in the room singing all their songs. It’s over, lights out, click, at 7, and I’m usually out by 7:30 because I have to get up at 3 a.m. I don’t know what I’m going to do when they’re teenagers, but I’ve been digging this weird time for us. I’m on a child’s schedule!”

Kotb further explains how she centers her life around her children.

Family to me is everything— and having one of my own is something I never thought I’d have,” says the 58-year-old, who adopted Haley Joy in 2017 with then Schiffman, according to People

Kotb dealt with the devastating news that she would not be able to conceive children after recouping from breast cancer, according to Wide Open Country.

Yet, she persevered in establishing her family through adoption.

“I had thought about having kids for a long, long time,” Kotb explained. “But one day I was sitting with my boyfriend and I said to him, ‘I’m going to have to talk to you about something because I can’t push it down anymore, push it away,’ ” she said.

Schiffman gave Kotb his full support and brought her first daughter into their lives. Sadly, the couple broke up in January, but Schiffman is still involved in raising both girls, People reports.

“Sometimes relationships evolve. Sometimes perfectly nice people can go their separate ways. Sometimes a relationship ends on your last breath, and sometimes it ends before that, and that’s OK,” she says, speaking of her former beau. “I don’t regret one day, not one minute, not one second of our time together because it brought me here.”

College Basketball Player Struck By Train Remembered As ‘Big Personality Who Could Light Up The Room’

Police in North Carolina said a freshman basketball player from Wingate University died upon impact when he was struck by a freight train, according to the Charlotte Observer.

Kyle Honore, 19, died at a railroad crossing Tuesday night after a train hit him; police are investigating the event, the Charlotte Observer reports.

“We want to remind Wingate University Students and the general public to be safe and always use the railway’s designated crossings,” Wingate Police Chief Craig Bradshaw said in an official statement.

“Not only is being on the railroad property anywhere other than a designated crossing dangerous, it’s also illegal trespassing.”

Wingate University honored the student-athlete with a post on Twitter.

“Wingate mourns the loss of freshman @WingateMBB student-athlete Kyle Honore,” the university wrote.

“We send our prayers, love, and support to Kyle’s family, friends, and loved ones.”

Honore began his first semester a few days earlier, according to WTTG

“At moments like these, we are reminded that life is both precious and fleeting. We can and should honor Kyle’s memory by doing all we can to look out for and care for each other,” Dr. Rhett Brown, the university’s president, said in a statement to WTTG.

Wingate’s associate head coach for its men’s basketball team, Marcus Kirkland, described Honore as “a big personality who could light up the room and make friends quickly,” according to NBC News.

“Kyle was a great addition to our team and showed great promise coming out of high school as a four-year varsity player and three-year starter as a point guard,” Kirkland said in a press statement.

“His presence will be missed by a lot of people.”

In March, Honore pledged his commitment to the university in a short video clip, People reports.

“First and foremost I want to thank my lord and savior Jesus Christ himself for helping me get to where I’m at,” he said in the video uploaded to his Twitter account.

“I also want to give a huge shout-out to my mom and dad, my brothers and family,” he continued.

“To my high school and AU coaches and all my teammates over the course of the years, thank you for working with me to become who I am today.”

As a former student of Potomac High School, the school paid homage to him in a touching Twitter post.

“On behalf of the Potomac HS [high school] community, we share our heartfelt condolences to the @PotomacBlue family, @CoachHonore & his family, @Classof2022Pshs and all who knew our amazing student athlete @therealkyle_11,” they posted.

“Support and resources are available in counseling as we grieve together.”

Honore’s last tweet was “Be comfortable being uncomfortable,” according to People.

Louisiana Mother Charged With Leaving Infant Daughter In Hot SUV For 5 Hours

The police charged a Louisiana mother with second-degree murder for allegedly leaving her six-month-old baby in a hot SUV for approximately five hours, according to KPLC TV.

Ivy Lee, 22, signaled an off-duty deputy for help when she discovered her child, Carissa Lewis, was not breathing, states the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office press release, People reports.

The sheriff’s office reports that the deputy tried to resuscitate the child but was unsuccessful; the infant was declared deceased at the hospital.

“Somebody out there would have loved this child, somebody would have loved the opportunity to raise this child,” Chief Deputy Gary “Stitch” Guillory said, KPLC TV reports.

Lee allegedly said the child was not in her custody. She later confessed to detectives that she drove to her place of employment and left her daughter in her vehicle for five hours. Temperatures hit 92 degrees that day, based on a weather report, People reports.

“Ultimately she stated that she left the child in her car while she went to work from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.,” Chief Deputy Guillory said, according to KPLC.

Guillory added: “She stated that she initially left the car running, but a coworker later told her the car was later running, and she turned her vehicle off.”

This incident is not the first time that Lee has been accused of endangering her child. According to a sheriff’s office’s report, the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services cited Lee for leaving her first child unsupervised in her car in 2019. Lee entered a guilty plea for a lesser charge of criminal mischief, WAFB reports.

Chief Deputy Guillory told WAFB that the mother gave her first child to a family member to care for, and there was no further investigation once DCFS was involved, People reports.

Lee faces charges of murder and the possession of marijuana. Her bail is $1.2 million.

It is unknown if Lee has hired legal representation or has pleaded guilty to the charges.

Wife of Harvard-trained Oncologist Who Went Missing In Gulf Of Mexico Filed For Divorce Same Day He Disappeared

A renowned Florida radiation oncologist and researcher went missing in the Gulf of Mexico over a week ago, and now the search has turned into a recovery case.

According to the New York Post, Dr. Chaundre Cross, 49, was spotted in Naples Bay Marina on Aug. 10, sailing on his 33-foot boat Vitamin Sea. According to reports, his wife, SarahJo Cross, reportedly filed for divorce the same day he disappeared.

According to NBC News, Coast Guard officials issued a press statement indicating they found Dr. Cross’ boat floating off the coast of Fort Myers and will suspend their search for the medical professional.

“It is always a difficult decision to suspend a search and rescue case,” said Capt. Michael Kahle, the commander of the Coast Guard’s St. Petersburg. “Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to the family and friends of Dr. Cross during this difficult time.”

Kathy Cady, Cross’ stepmother and a Naples-based nurse, posted a statement on Facebook showing her gratitude to the U.S. Coast Guard, the Collier County Police, and Cross’ “friends and the citizens of Naples who unselfishly gave their time and boats in the search for him,” according to the New York Post.

Pastor Apologizes After Calling Church Members ‘Poor’ and ‘Broke’ for Not Buying Him Luxury Watch

Pastor Apologizes After Calling Church Members ‘Poor’ and ‘Broke’ for Not Buying Him Luxury Watch

Recently, gospel singer Kim Burrell caught backlash after berating parishioners at Kingdom City Church, calling them “broke” and “ugly.”

Now another leader of the faith, Pastor Carlton Funderburke, who preaches from the pulpit of the Church at the Well in Kansas, has landed himself in the hot seat after he went on a diatribe against his congregation for failing to gift him with an expensive watch,  according to NBC News.

@kansascitydefender Kansas City Pastor GOES OFF on congregation calling them “poor, broke busted and disgusted” because they didn’t give him enough money to buy a new watch he’s been wanting. It’s pastors like these that give the church a bad name smh an also why a lot of our generation left the church. What y’all think? 🤔♬ original sound – kcdefender

“See that’s how I know you still poor, broke, busted, and disgusted because of how you’ve been honoring me,” Funderburke said during his sermon on August 7, The New York Post reports.

“I’m not worth your McDonald’s money? I’m not worth your Red Lobster money? I ain’t worth your St. John’s knit? Y’all can’t afford it no-how,” he continues as some church-goers seemingly agree with him off-camera.
“I ain’t worth your Louis Vuitton? I ain’t worth your Prada? I’m not worth your Gucci?”

Funderburke attempted to emphasize the responsibility that the members of his church have to maintain the lifestyle of those who spread the gospel, according to The New York Post.

“Ooh, you can buy a Movado [watch] at Sam’s [Club] and you know I asked for one last year. And here it is all the way in August and I still ain’t got it,” he demands, speaking of the expensive timepiece.

After the video went viral and was viewed 550,000 times, Funderburke  issued an apology video, explaining that the clip was taken out of context.

“Though there is context behind the content of the clip, no context will suffice to explain the hurt and anguish caused by my words. I’ve spoken to those I am accountable to and have received their correction and instruction,” he clarifies, according to NBC.

“I have also privately apologized to our church, who has extended their love and support to me.”

Since the Bible says that “every good gift comes from above — from God in Heaven,” maybe he should wait on the Lord for his luxury gifts.

Not Booked but Busy Getting a BBL: Watch Former RHOA Star Nene Leakes Undergo a Brazilian Butt Lift

Not Booked but Busy Getting a BBL: Watch Former RHOA Star Nene Leakes Undergo a Brazilian Butt Lift

These days Nene Leakes is taking some “me-time” given her claims that she’s been blacklisted in the entertainment industry and can’t secure a job, a situation she’s blamed on her former Real Housewives of Atlanta boss Andy Cohen.

At issue, the two have butt heads over Leakes’ claims that she experienced racism on the set of the hit Bravo show, which Cohen vehemently denies.

On the flip side, now Leakes is putting heads together to discuss her butt.

Although the 54-year-old Atlanta-based restauranteur has been a little less booked and busy these days, she took to her Instagram to chronicle her journey of getting a Brazilian Butt Lift, commonly called a BBL.

Although Leakes has been candid about her previous plastic surgeries, including a nose job, BBLs are considered a little more concerning. The dangerous procedure transfers fat from one section of your body– most likely the abs–to a person’s buttocks to make them more rounded and bouncier.

Leakes announced that she signed up as an ambassador for Dr. Stanley A. Okoro‘s Georgia Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Surgery center and implored her fans to join her on the “Perfectly Pretty You” journey, according to ET Online.

“I did it! I got a ‘ ‘ with Dr. Okoro! Follow my surgery journey with Dr. Okoro at Georgia Plastic. I’m almost ready to show off my new snatched look but I want you to be snatched too!⁣,” Leakes posted. “I’ve partnered with Georgia Plastic to give all of you guys $ just use my code ” ” and let them know I sent ya! ⁣.”

While we couldn’t seem to share the Instagram post, click here to check out the actual video and peep some pics below.

The RHOA star admitted when she first heard of BBL, she thought her doctor intended to give her a massive posterior. However, she and Dr. Okoro coined her new look as a “professional, mini BBL,” Ace ShowBiz reported.

Leakes said she liked her backside but wanted to improve some areas. “I’m only looking to fixing my problem areas. So, we called in a ‘professional, mini BBL.’ And, I love it,” Leakes explained.

Leakes also revealed she was interested in the Liposuction 360 and wanted to address her bra roll and stomach, according to Monsters and Critics.

In one clip she posted on Instagram, Leakes can be seen in the operating room undergoing the procedure. While she has not unveiled her new look, Leakes offered her fans an exclusive promotion for those interested in having work done by Okoro.

New York Man Charged With Hate Crime for Hurling N-Word and Knife at 3 Black Men

New York Man Charged With Hate Crime for Hurling N-Word and Knife at 3 Black Men

Police arrested and charged a New York City man for a hate crime after he threatened three Black men and one white man with a knife Wednesday night, according to NBC News.

John Borzumato, a 58-year-old white man, confronted the group of men in a Staten Island neighborhood “unprovoked,” the NYPD told NBC News.

Borzumato is accused of spewing racial slurs, including the N-word, at the men because they parked their vehicle on Carlyle Green, according to law enforcement, Staten Island Advance/SILive.com reports.

Borzumato, intoxicated, yelled, “You n—— don’t belong here,” Borzumato said, based on a criminal complaint. “You n—— have to get out of here,” NBC News reports.

According to police reports, witnesses held Borzumato back, causing him to drop his knife. Still, he continued to argue with one of the men, who happened to be his neighbor, 20-year-old Nathaniel Garcia, according to NBC News.

Borzumato shoved Garcia, who punched Borzumato, “causing him to fall to the ground and strike his head,” the NYPD said.

Borzumato was knocked unconscious and was taken to a nearby hospital. He faces charges of a hate crime in the second degree, menacing in the second degree, criminal possession of a weapon in the fourth degree, and harassment in the second degree, according to a criminal complaint. He is scheduled to appear in court on Sept. 27.

Garcia faces charges of assault in the second and third degrees and harassment, his attorney, Adam Uris, said to NBC News.

“It’s our belief that once the court has the opportunity to look at the evidence and interview the witnesses in this case, that they will decide not to prosecute this matter,” Uris said.

“We’re going to aggressively defend this case until Mr. Garcia is proven innocent.”

Krystle Garcia-Bustamante, Garcia’s mother, told NBC News her son was defending himself and his friends.

“He was yelling at them, calling them the N-word and telling them ‘one of you n—— is going to die tonight,'” Garcia-Bustamante, who spoke to her son via FaceTime after the incident, said.

“He hit him one time in order to stop a threat.”

“Her son was acting heroically,” Uris said.

“He was acting in the manner consistent with his Marine training. He was defending himself and others at the time when an unhinged man was attacking them with a knife.”

Garcia-Bustamante regrets moving her family to the same neighborhood as Borzumato.

“I feel like I’ve made a tragic mistake and I wish I was back living in the neighborhood I used to live,” she said.

“I feel deep regret that my son has to go through this.”
