A new petition submitted to the White House demands that the Library of Congress rescind its recent order making the unlocking of cellphones illegal, Mashable reports.

Unlocking a cellphone allows it to work on more than one carrier’s network, which is helpful to international travelers who need their phones to work on different networks or others who just want to be able to switch carriers when they choose.

In October 2012, the Library of Congress, decided that unlocking cellphones would now be restricted in accordance with the new anti-hacking law called the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). This restriction went into effect on Jan. 26.
