The original cellphone, which debuted in 1973, paved the way for many of today’s mobile devices. When looking at the top US phone makers–Apple, Samsung and LG–it’s evident cellphones have come a long way, including powerful processors, voice and facial recognition, stunning screen quality and thin, sleek designs.

Forty years ago today, Motorola’s Martin Cooper, 84, placed the first phone call in New York City. The call reportedly lasted 20 minutes.
