John W. Rogers Jr., the founder, chairman and CEO of Ariel Investments, is the featured Power Player on this week’s edition of the Black Enterprise Business Report, hosted by Caroline V. Clarke. Chicago-based Ariel Investments manages more than $16 billion in assets and is the nation’s fifth largest Black-owned asset management firm. Rogers founded Ariel Capital Management, now Ariel Investments L.L.C., in 1983, creating the first family of equity mutual funds managed by African Americans. For close to 30 years, he has promoted financial literacy and wealth-building through investing using the Ariel Education Initiative and advocates for diversity through the Black Corporate Directors Conference.
Our Entrepreneur of the Week segment features Wendi Levy and Kim Etheredge, co-founders of Mixed Chicks, a hair-care products company targeting the diverse textures and hair-care needs of multicultural and biracial women. When Levy and Etheredge started the company, both still worked full time as a teacher and public relations executive, respectively. Levy worked with Etheredge’s sister, who introduced the two. Both biracial (Etheredge’s mother is Irish and her father is Black American; Levy’s mother is Black American and her father is Jewish), the two became friends, and eventually the business venture was born.
Also, our Wealth for Life segment explores how to deal with hidden bank fees with FDIC Associate Director of Compliance Examinations Silvia Plunkett. And Colin Eppiah, brand ambassador of U’Luvka Vodka, offers great branding tips in our Executive Style segment.
