A Black Businesswoman in China: Traveling as a Foreigner

If you’ve read about the recent successful trip that the National Urban League hosted in Beijing or have a general interest to expand your business into China, I would like to share some discoveries I had on a recent trip.  I traveled to Shanghai, Beijing and Hong Kong for three weeks on behalf of a University client.  Our goal was to identify companies from a variety of industries who would be interested in hiring students for internships. Visiting a variety of employers offered a rare insight into Chinese business culture. My colleague and I had no tour guides or pre-arranged travel plans.  There were no car services waiting when we landed at each airport or daily transportation guides. (And that’s quite tricky when neither my colleague or I spoke fluent Mandarin or Cantonese)  As a result, I gained an invaluable experience of the cities and the people through an unfiltered lens. Over the next 4 blog posts, I’ll share some of my discoveries as they may be helpful to your current or future travels.

One of my biggest revelations was cultural. Prior to my travel to China, I thought I had awareness about what it meant to be American, female and African-American/Black from an international perspective as I’ve traveled to numerous international locations.  But I left for my trip to China unsure of how I would be perceived or treated in my daily interactions. Would I be well received or would my trip be plagued with uncomfortable moments of racism? There are plenty of blogs and comments posted on sites such as TeachAbroadChina.com, Chinese-Forum.com, TheBeijinger.com and Shanghaiist.com, from people with mixed opinions about what I might experience during my trip.

My three weeks expanded my cultural awareness and taught me a new aspect of what it means to be a foreigner. During my travels, I was regarded as either Chinese or foreigner.  My race and other “isms” were viewed secondary as the overall category of being “non Chinese.”  And being “non Chinese” did not come with second class treatment.  I was treated warmly or with the same regard as other travelers in daily situations.  Customer service settings were friendly and courteous.  I specifically remembering visiting several high-end stores one day dressed in very casual clothes.  Rather than someone trailing me or judging whether I could afford the item, I was given plenty of space to wander, yet received extremely attentive service as I asked questions or tried on multiple sizes.

Experience after experience supported this idea, from my visit to the hutongs of Beijing to my daily meals where I had to explain to Chinese waiters that I was a vegetarian in a language that has no direct translation for someone who doesn’t eat meat.  No one stared when I was in areas away from main tourist destinations or the center of the city where few folks of color travel.  And no one made me feel anything but comfortable as I navigated in cabs from building to building throughout the cities.  It was a new experience and, personally, very freeing.

  • LOL.  You mean you are still being followed around in retail stores… I thought they had masked that with the all those surveillance cameras nowadays… 

    Probably 98% (my guesstimate) of the toy products sold in Walmart are Made in China, and I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that 95% of the other products sold in Walmart are also Made in China.  Always been curious about this…

    Although I’m not a regular reader of BE, I have read at least 40 of its magazines cover to cover in my lifetime. I don’t recall ever reading an article about China. I’m glad to read your article today, and look forward to learning more about how Americans are doing business in China.

      Outside of an American working for a major Multinational Corporation (MNC), it would take a lot of work for an American to do business in China because of their strict regulation. It would be wise for anyone that wants to do business in China to have a partner located there or that person should be willing to relocate to the country; if not, doing business there is that more difficult. Some major clothing designers who clothes are made in China (urban and mass marketers), work with textile companies located in China. These textiles companies become there local offices in China. This allows the designers to have someone based in the country to make sure that the factories producing their products are being monitored constantly and ensures that they produce quality work; which these designers can’t do that from the states. There are not many Americans working for Multinational companies aboard, the whole expatriate compensation package is no longer as popular with MNC’s as they were in the past. These large multinational companies are now able to hire local talents. I loved my visit to China (besides the stares everywhere we went), I also went for 3 weeks; I visited Hong Kong, Guanghou, Shanghai, and Beijing. Their most negative experiences were in the US whether in terms of society or the difficulty they experienced in setting up business here. I look forward to going abroad myself one day.
