In Hamilton, GA a cemetery is divided by a chain link fence. One side has manicured lawns and gleaming headstones while the other is riddled with overgrown brush and headstones that are unmarked and crumbling.
The cemetery had been divided into a black and white side since the days of slavery. The graves of slaves lay unmarked deep within the woods. While the graves of those who had died within the 20th century are being overrun by the brush and trees.
Ownership of the land must be established so that someone (the county or the state) can be help accountable for maintenance. Unfortunately, this has not been established. Efforts to clean up to the cemetery have now been placed on the shoulders of volunteers.
