Ava DuVernay became the first African-American woman to win the U.S. Directing Award for her second feature film Middle of Nowhere at the Sundance Film Festival Saturday night.
The director won in the dramatic category for a film that follows the life of woman fighting to reconcile her marriage and own identity after her husband is incarcerated.
DuVernay’s distribution entity AFFRM (African-American Film Festival Releasing Movement) and Participant Media have acquired the theatrical rights to the film.
