Or is it never too early to learn how to manage money?

A morning talk show posed an interesting question last week and Black Enterprise was wondering what you thought.

At what age do you think it’s appropriate for your child to get a job? Do you think school is your child’s job? Or does a job early in life teach you valuable lessons about money management? How old were you when you got your first job?

Take our poll and leave us comments below.

  • Wow this is interesting!
I was 11 years young when I first had a real job…it was delivering newspapers every  wednesday & saturday!  I’ve been working since than. I’m 28 now  &  at the rate i’m going I plan on retiring at 35 god is good!
But I feel that is to young to be out working for notes(MONEY)! 16 or seventeen is an ok age!
    Enjoy Life:)

After an informal poll of friends and family, it really does seem like those who started work earlier are a little more ambitious and have a little stronger work ethic. These are the people who end up being entrepreneurs–or at least having lucrative side hustles–and who go after and get internships and other similar opportunities. When I was 15 and wanted a job, my parents told me that school was my job and that I shouldn’t be in a rush to work because once I started, I’d be working for the rest of my life. I got my first job after I went away to college. I was 18.

  • I wouldn’t go any earlier than 14 as I’m not sure how safe it is for a younger child in this day and age to travel back and forth to work. I was 15 or 16 and would have worked earlier (mom had limited resources) if I could have. However, if a parent or another family member is an entrepreneur, its never too early to get the child acclimated to the business environment , in fact that would be ideal. But the personality and current school performance of the child has to be taken into consideration. The main goal in this day and age of any high school student, particularly minorities, is to create the most attractive high school transcript in order to get into a good college. If work interferes with that , it has to be placed on the back burner.

I started looking for work when I was 15, didn’t get my first job until I was 19, and by then I already had another part-time job in the military. The closest I came to learning money management was making sure there was money in the account. Tried investing in a mutual fund, but that only lasted a minute.
