If you’re preparing to apply to business school, you already know that the multiple-choice questions of the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) are tallied electronically. Well, now your essays will be also. As of February, the two GMAT essays, chosen from 175 pre-announced questions, will be read and scored by both a professor and a computer.
The essay-reading computer program, e-rater, was developed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) of Princeton, New Jersey. It has been proven to agree with the expert human scorer between 87%-94% of the time-about the same as any two expert human scorers. For more information, visit the ETS Website at www.ets.org.
