Cutting back on carry-ons

Before you pack for your next trip, remember the new, strict carryon guidelines now being enforced by some major airlines and encouraged by the Federal Aviation Administration. The FAA suggests that airlines allow only two pieces of luggage per passenger with a total weight of not more than 20 pounds. Passengers who carry on oversized or extra baggage slow up boarding and may cause takeoff delays. More important, each year thousands of people are injured by items that fall out of the overstuffed overhead bins. The Association of Flight Attendants in Washington, D.C., found that more than 3,000 flight attendants were injured last year in baggage-related accidents.

Last November, Northwest Airlines required passengers to board with just one carry-on plus one small item, such as a purse or laptop. Delta and USAirways allow just two carryOhS, with laptops counted as one of those items.

American Airlines has maintained a flexible carry-on policy. No specific number of bags is allowed but carry-ons must be able to fit under the seat or in overhead bins. Continental has also kept its original two bag carry-on policy, not counting purses and laptops. The airline is, however, increasing the size of its overhead bins. Keep in mind that for most carriers, carry-ons must be no larger than 22 by 14 by 9 inches.
