Macey Bullock’s ebony desk is usually hidden beneath piles of documents. After answering a steady stream of phone calls from clients, he barely has enough time to take a lunch break before handling staff management issues. But by the end of the day, he doesn’t feel like he’s gotten much done.
“I don’t always have complete control of my schedule. A lot of unexpected things come up during the day, so it’s hard to stay on top of everything,” says Bullock, owner of Maylock Realty in Newark, New Jersey.
“You can’t make the most of your time and be productive if you’re not organized,” says Valerie Nossal, senior marketing coordinator at the Sidney, New York-based time management company At-A-Glance Group. Nossal offers the following pointers to help you get back in control of your life at the office:
- Know that you can’t control everything. The goal is to become more organized, not to schedule every minute of the day. Allow a certain amount of flexibility in your schedule so you can handle events that pop up unexpectedly.
- Think of organization as an investment. For example, if you take management seminars, be sure to invest the time to apply the information to your own life.
- Leave a buffer zone in your schedule. Set some time aside between meetings or duties to handle items that aren’t a part of your regular routine.
