They are catchphrases you’ve been hearing a lot these days: diversity, diversity hiring, and workplace diversity. Certainly they’re not new, but this time there’s a difference in how employers at major corporations are reaching out to qualified African Americans to fill jobs. This time they’re using the Internet.
One notable site is IMDiversity.com (www.imdiversity.com). Organized in “villages” (African American, Asian American, Hispanic American, etc.), the site features news, special reports, and the all-important job search where candidates can look for “diversity sensitive” employers.
Visitors can sign up for an account, then post and manage their résumés and create job search agents (simply type in your search criteria, and the agent looks for jobs that matches it, then notifies you). The Career Center offers several useful tools and tips for managing your career including articles on networking, avoiding career mistakes, and keeping abreast of employment trends. There’s even a section for employers to search a bank of qualified minority candidates. The site also links to the Black Collegian Online (www.black-collegian.com), where visitors can post their résumés and search the job listings.
