Q. What factors should one consider when making a career move?
A. For most people, money is the greatest intensive when considering a career move. In today’s job market, an 8%12% increase in base pay in a job you like is the minimum one should consider, says Juan Menefee, president and founder of Juan Menefee & Associates, a diversity search firm headquartered in Oak Park, But, he warns, job seekers should career paths are not always defined. “Candidates often mistake more money as the decisive indicator, but they should also weigh the long-term benefits.”
For example, a sales representative making $70,000 a year who wants to move into management, but lacks the interpersonal and supervisory skills, should not frown on a move into the corporate headquarters. “While the employee may take a 10% pay cut he or she is rultivating management skills,” says Menefee. “After a year, the employee is primed for a possible district sales management position, making double he or she did as a sales rep, and ran now shop those skills around to other companies.”
Experienced recruiters tan assist you in identifying the right fit. Says Menefee: “Follow the old proverb that says, `If you find a job that you love, you’ll never work another day in your life.'”
