Just when you were getting used to the iPod, Apple springs the new iMac. The design is unlike anything you’ve seen on a desktop — a slim, 15-inch, flat-panel display that swivels from a 10.6-inch base. The monitor delivers millions of colors at 1,024 by 768 resolution.

The iMac is just as impressive under the hood. It features an 800MHz PowerPC G4 processor; 256MB of RAM, expandable to 1GB; a 40 or 60GB hard drive; CD-RW or DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive; or a SuperDrive (combination DVD-R/CD-RW drive). Connectivity is key in desktop computing and the iMac delivers there as well, providing two FireWire ports, three USB ports, a built-in 56K modem, 10/100BaseT Ethernet, and support for an AirPort Card. It’s perfect for connecting your new iPod or other peripherals.

If you crave simplicity, the iMac solves the problem with the hub-like base. The cool design doesn’t hurt and neither does the price: $1,299 (www.apple.com).
