Q: I’m attending law school in the areas of practice should I consider?
A: This is the decade of the general corporate and corporate security lawyer. “With the recent surge in big mergers and acquisitions, buy-and-sell agreements and security offerings, individuals with two to four years of corporate law are in high demand,” soys Larry A. Green, vice president at Winston & Green, a Chicago-based recruitment firm catering to law firms and corporations. Also, the growing population of baby boomers has increased the demand for trust planning estate planning attorneys and, especially, corporate transactional and healthcare attorneys. “With the changes in insurance laws, HMOs and PPOs,” odds Green, “pharmaceutical companies, healthcare management agencies and nursing homes want lawyers who con do the work.
“Patent law is also a booming field, and those with chemical or electrical engineering backgrounds con write their own ticket,” he says. “Ironically, it’s also on area with the fewest number of African Americans.”
Green warns those interested in environmental, labor and employment law to beware: “These areas were hot in the 1980s, but with the loosening of environmental and labor laws, these fields hove stagnated.” He adds that knowing what you want to do before entering law school is critical. “This way, you will target the internships and summer clerk positions that will give you a better chance of succeeding in your chosen field later.”
