A new feature on the American Heart Association’s Web site is just right for consumers who want to send a memorable gift with a personal, lasting touch a gift that won’t end up in the back of the closet (or worse). The solution is a Heart to Heart e-card, an e-mail greeting card that will not only brighten someone’s day, but may very well add years to his or her life.
E-cards are a convenient, cost-free way to give someone a heartfelt message while saying happy birthday, congratulations or just hello. Simply log onto the AHA’s web site at www.americanheart.org, click on the Heart to Heart e-mail link and you’re on your way. Choose an image for your e-card, then pick an appropriate inspirational saying and a heart-healthy tip you’d like to convey. Add in your own personal message, enter the receiver’s e-mail address and you’re done.
A queuing option allows you to create a card up to a year in advance of the delivery date. The heart-healthy messages you send creatively remind the recipients to take care of their bodies through regular exercise, not smoking, and nutritious eating.
“We all need to know about heart disease and stroke,” says Martha Hill, Ph.D., president of the AHA and director of the Center of Research at the School of Nursing at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. “An e-card is a great way to show friends and family how much you love them and to remind them to take care of their hearts.”
Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in America, and stroke follows at No. 3. Statistics show that African American men and women are more likely to die of stroke than other ethnic groups. E-cards are one way to help educate African Americans about implementing the healthy habits that could cut the risks. “You are sending a lot more than a card,” says Hill. “It’s a gift that could result in a longer life, a healthier life and even a saved life.”
