Today, employees are less apprehensive about leaving their jobs than in prior years. In a recent poll of 911 companies, voluntary employee turnover hit 12.6% in 1997, up from 11.3% the year before. The study, conducted by Compensation Resources in Franklin Park, New Jersey, tracked workers who left jobs by choice and did not include those who retired, were fired or lost their jobs through attrition. Trade industries, which include manufacturing, had the highest turnover rates (41.2%), nonprofit associations were next (20.5%), followed by banking (20.0%) and information technology (16.6%).
