Q: How do you prepare mentally for a major life change?
Jamaica, New York
A: “Look at what the change has in store for you, but don’t look at the situation from one perspective, [as in either] just positive
or just negative,” says Muriel Kennedy, Ph.D., a clinical psychologist and local chapter chair for the National Association of Black Psychologists in Washington, D.C. “Take a more holistic view.”
The amount of time and effort you devote to serious consideration of the transition is extremely important. Not surprisingly, it will ultimately determine your level of internal comfort and satisfaction with the decision. If, upon reflection, the transition you are preparing to make is congruous with your purpose in life-the reason you believe you are here-then you will feel adequately, and positively, prepared to go ahead.
Once you have determined why you’re going to make the change, you will be able to seek the necessary connections, people and resources to help you along in the process. Fortunately, you rarely have to go through such events alone.
