Filmmakers, playwrights, web series producers, and visual artists can present their work during a two week event promoting underrepresented storytellers among LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning)Â individuals and communities of color. The My True Colors Festival is now calling for entries for the 2015 season.
Submissions in all artistic disciplines and lengths will be considered as long as these works showcase a unique perspective, cultural experience, and diversity. Works must be created by member of LGBTQ community and/or LGBTQ-themed. Open call until April 1.
My True Colors Festival’s mission is to fight for social justice and to promote cultural diversity through the arts by promoting works by and for LGBTQ individuals and persons of color. This is actualized by presenting works that explore social issues, encourage dialogue, and reflect the whole spectrum of multicultural LGBTQ lives through Theatre, Film, Original Web Series, Visual Arts, & Live Stream Internet. The My True Colors Festival is promoted as a conduit for bringing new LGBTQ talent to the forefront from behind the scenes and to connect with entertainment industry insiders.
The festival will take place June 12-26, 2015 in conjunction with National LGBTQ Pride Month at venues in Harlem and New York’s Times Square theater district. In addition to offering a safe and affirming environment to develop and showcase their innovative artistic works, the My True Colors Festival seeks to keep production costs down for independent artists, starting with such benefits as FREE performance space, FREE storage, FREE insurance, FREE marketing & publicity, and more. The My True Colors Festival will live stream select shows to capture a national and global audience. Other benefits include a series of educational workshops, panel discussions, developmental pitch competitions, and influencer receptions.
My True Colors Festival is a sponsored artist with Performance Zone Inc (dba The Field), a not-for-profit, tax-exempt, 501(c)(3) organization serving the performing arts community. The festival is a program created by the True Colors Project, a social enterprise founded for the sole purpose of developing innovative and influential creative works that address social and human issues.
Reports show that LGBTQ persons continue to struggle as Americans to fully participate in society. For instance, in 15 states, individuals can legally marry their same-sex partner on Sunday and then legally be fired from their jobs on Monday simply for exercising that right. In the U.S. it is still legal in 29 states to fire, refuse housing, or deny services to Americans because of their sexual-orientation or gender identity. LGBT individuals and families report harassment–even violence oftentimes–and discrimination in the workplace in addition to when seeking goods and services in their neighborhoods.
