Â The adoption of new technologies has increased the educational options available to continuing education students. One tech- driver has ushered in an entirely new era: that of online degree programs. While learning outside of a physical classroom setting was rare just a decade ago, in 2013 nearly half (45%) of the 21 million students in the U.S. took at least one online course.
A 2013 study conducted by Columbia University confirms that, along with a well-planned curriculum, factors such as clearly communicated goals and learning objectives, the successful use of technology, and an opportunity for personal interaction with instructors and other students are the main distinguishing factors in predicting the success of online students.
Despite the numerous advantages of learning online, such as flexibility, low cost, and access to a industry-leading curriculum, the industry is not without its challenges. Online educators face three key challenges in their journey toward mainstream industry and marketplace acceptance.

One of the best ways to advance in your career and boost your salary is to learn more about your target industry. One way to do this is through certificate programs, which are shorter and more targeted than full degree programs. People who have earned professional certificates earn 34% to 39% more than those who have not, depending on their sex.

Today, 75% of small to mid-size businesses embrace online credentials.
