LONDON (AP) – Britain is banning the exports of a machine marketed as a bomb detection device because of allegations that it does not work.
The Department for Business Innovation and Skills is banning export of the device after a BBC Newsnight investigation challenged the claims of the company, ATSC.
The exports were banned to Iraq and Afghanistan because of the risk that they could hurt British and friendly forces.
Britain’s Embassy in Baghdad raised concerns with Iraqi authorities, who bought the ADE651, for security checkpoints.
Britain’s Press Association reported that Avon and Somerset Police had arrested the company’s director. Police not name the man arrested on suspicion of fraud by misrepresentation, as is customary with British criminal investiations.
