SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. (AP) – In a suburban New York City village heavily populated with Haitians, everyone from Hasidic Jews to police officers is raising funds for earthquake recovery.

Most of the Haitians in Spring Valley – 25 miles north of New York – have lost a loved one in Port-au-Prince and the mayor says the sadness is palpable. But signs of support are everywhere.

In the parking lot outside Village Hall, a huge shipping container is filling with food, water and medical supplies. A rescue-and-recovery team led by the deputy mayor is in Haiti now.

The Haitians’ fellow parishioners, many of them poor, are donating cash for earthquake victims.

The mayor says she hopes the cooperation and sympathy will help the village overcome some divisions between ethnic groups.
